SUMMARY:Manitoba Cycling Association's 3rd annual Tour de Glace: Family-Friendly Ice Cream Shop Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSES JUNE 8 AT 10 PM! \n\n\n\nGrab a friend and your bike\, let’s go get ice cream! \n\n\n\nThe Manitoba Cycling Association is pleased to host another year of Tour de Glace\, the ice cream bike tour. Registration includes a guided group ride with 2- or 3-stop options to some excellent local ice cream shops for a treat. This event is open to all\, you do not need to be a member of the Manitoba Cycling Association. Families and youth are welcome to join! \n\n\n\nThe ride begins in the green space in front of the Lyric Theatre at Assiniboine Park at 2:00 pm. Please arrive at 1:45 pm to check in and meet your ride leader. The ride will finish up at Assiniboine Park by 4:00 pm. Giveaways will be drawn at the end of the ride. \n\n\n\n2023 Tour de Glace ice cream shops include: \n\n\n\n\nNucci’s Gelati (643 Corydon Ave)\n\n\n\nSargent Sundae (2053 Portage Ave)\n\n\n\nTeeyah’s Candy\, Soda and Ice Cream (#104-240 Graham Ave)\n\n\n\n\nThe 3-stop group will have an average pace of 15-20 km/hour over the course of about 21 km. Ice cream stops include Nucci’s Gelati\, Sargent Sundae and Teeyah’s. Participants may choose any flavour at Nucci’s and Teeyah’s\, and have the option between a Grabber or a Whatchamacallit from Sargent Sundae. The 3-stop ride is $12.00 plus tax + processing fees. \n\n\n\nThe 2-stop group will have an average pace of 10-15 km/hour over the course of about 16 km. The 2-stop group is open to all youth under 18 who are able to maintain the group average pace. Ice cream stops include Nucci’s and Sargent Sundae. Participants may choose any flavour at Nucci’s and will have the option between a Grabber or a Whatchamacallit from Sargent Sundae. The 2-stop ride is $8.00 plus tax + processing fees. \n\n\n\nParticipant discretion is advised: This tour is packed with dairy and possibly nut-containing calories. Unfortunately we cannot offer allergen-friendly alternatives. If you wish to participate without actually eating at each stop\, or wish to register with a friend\, there is a registration option for $0 tag-alongs (plus $3.50 non-member fee\, if applicable). All riders must register for insurance purposes\, however\, if young children are in a bucket seat or carrier they are not required to register unless they want their own ice cream at each stop. \n\n\n\nPlease note that all riders who are not members of the Manitoba Cycling Association will be required to pay a $3.50 fee as part of registration. If you would prefer to become a member for the 2023 season\, take a look at the MCA Membership Page and reach out to Twila if you have any questions. To be crystal clear: if you are participating as a $0 tag-along but you are not a member of the MCA\, you will still need to pay the $3.50 insurance fee. If you have a child in a carrier\, they do not need to pay the $3.50 fee. All “butts on bikes” need insurance coverage to participate. \n\n\n\nThere will be no refunds for this event. If weather is poor\, you are welcome to drive to each stop to pick up your ice cream. Email CyclingForAll.MB@gmail.com for event inquires or to volunteer.  \n\n\n\nPlease register here: https://ccnbikes.com/#!/events/tour-de-glace-2023

SUMMARY:Bike Winnipeg: Bike for the Future
DESCRIPTION:A ride to demand climate justice for our children! \n\n\n\nJoin Bike Winnipeg on their second Bike for the Future ride \, a family friendly ride through a variety of neighbourhoods and ending at the Bike Week Birthday Bash at the Legislature. \n\n\n\nMuster Location: The Forks \n\n\n\nEnd Location: The Bike Week Birthday Bash @ The Leg \n\n\n\nBike For the Future: \n\n\n\nWe are a group of concerned citizens advocating for safe spaces for our friends and families to actively commute. Walking and cycling are the two most environmentally friendly modes of transportation and need to play a key role in our greenhouse gas reductions. Transportation makes up 50% of Winnipeg’s emissions (https://winnipeg.ca/sustainability/ClimateChange.stm). \n\n\n\nWe are in the midst of a climate emergency. Extreme weather events are happening more frequently. Locally we have been suffering through drought which has had an extremely negative impact on farmers and will inevitably raise the cost of putting food on our tables. Air quality warnings became common place in the summer of 2021 as fires raged in northern Manitoba and Ontario. Every day when we turn on our radios and TV’s and hear and see how our global neighbors are suffering from a host of extreme weather events being amplified by anthropogenic climate change. We have had enough foot dragging by all levels of government. They have a responsibility to make walking and riding a bike the easiest way to get around within and between our urban neighborhoods. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, we proudly watched our youth take to the streets of downtown Winnipeg to demand action on Climate. Many of us marched in solidarity with them. We intend to continue their fight to push all levels of governments to speed up the move to low carbon transportation to help protect their future. \n\n\n\nTo encourage Winnipeggers to actively commute\, they need a transportation system that allows them to safely\, comfortably\, and conveniently travel from point a to point b\, they need access to safe bike storage\, and they need affordable access to bicycles. Currently 60% of Winnipeggers feel unsafe walking and cycling. To make it safe and comfortable\, motorized vehicles need to drive slowly on our residential roads (no more than 30 km/h). We need separated and protected spaces on routes with higher vehicle speeds and we need plenty of places to safely cross busy streets and rail lines in a reasonable amount of time. \n\n\n\n1) We demand that the city start making investments on par with need and non-budget public policy in our cycling and walking strategy. Currently\, the City of Winnipeg funds 2 million dollars’ worth of AT projects a year; the city should be spending at least 10 times this amount. It would be reasonable to expect that the cycling network will be completed within the next 10-20 years\, not by 2100 at the current pace of budgeting. \n\n\n\n2) The city and province need to work out how to lower the default speed limit to 30 km/h immediately. City engineers can set higher speeds on collector and arterial routes where appropriate. \n\n\n\n3) The Winnipeg Police need to stop targeting people that ride their bikes on the sidewalks in areas where no safe alternative exists. The problem is not sidewalk riding\, the problem is a lack of safe infrastructure for people actively commuting. \n\n\n\n4) The city and province need to get a handle on bicycle theft. There is an epidemic of bike thefts which discourage people from actively commuting. \n\n\n\n5) The city needs to look at solutions for areas that are difficult to cross. For example\, when the Arlington bridge closes\, the distance that someone living on the north side of those tracks needed to travel to get somewhere on the south side could increase significantly. It would be reasonable to expect the city and the railway company to produce a new crossing or tunnel. Rivers also pose a significant barrier to walking and cycling: the city needs to look at adding more pedestrian and cycling bridges to make cycling between neighborhoods more efficient.
